The Florida State Seminoles were hoping to bolster their defensive line through the transfer portal, but a key target has slipped through their fingers—and landed with a familiar foe.
Former Texas State defensive lineman Devarrick Woods, who was on FSU's radar for a late addition, announced his commitment to the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday. The move not only leaves the Seminoles empty-handed but sets up a potentially painful reunion: FSU is scheduled to host Clemson on Oct. 31, 2026, meaning Woods could be lining up against them in a crucial ACC matchup.
Woods, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive lineman from Bossier City, Louisiana, entered the transfer portal after the NCAA granted him an extra year of eligibility. His recruitment quickly heated up, with visits to the Florida Gators and Kansas State Wildcats before he ultimately chose Clemson—a rare transfer portal pickup for head coach Dabo Swinney.
Woods began his college career as an unranked prospect at Hinds Community College in Mississippi, where he spent two seasons and racked up 66 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and three pass breakups in 18 games. He then transferred to Texas State ahead of the 2025 season, playing in 11 games and recording 16 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, and a quarterback hurry across 177 snaps.
For the Seminoles, missing out on Woods stings, but they haven't been idle. FSU has already added two transfer defensive linemen this offseason in Jordan Sanders and Rylan Kennedy. The coaching staff is also actively pursuing JUCO defensive lineman Malachi Brown, who recently named the Seminoles among his top three schools.
While Woods will bring veteran depth to Clemson for his final season of eligibility, the Seminoles will need to look elsewhere to shore up their defensive front before the 2026 campaign kicks off.
