Markus Burton's college basketball journey is taking him just a short drive down the road.
The former Notre Dame star guard officially signed with the Indiana Hoosiers on Monday, making his previously announced commitment a done deal. For fans and family who have followed his career from South Bend, the move to Bloomington means they won't have to travel far to see him finish his collegiate career.
Burton, a dynamic point guard who hails from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, originally committed to Notre Dame as part of the 2023 recruiting class after being named Mr. Basketball in the state. At the time, landing the local star was seen as a major early win for head coach Micah Shrewsberry's program—a sign that Notre Dame could keep top in-state talent at home.
And Burton delivered on that promise in a big way. During his freshman season, he averaged an impressive 17.5 points per game, earning ACC Rookie of the Year honors and a spot on the third-team All-ACC. He also set a Notre Dame freshman scoring record and was among the nation's top scorers for first-year players.
Now, Burton is officially a Hoosier, where Indiana views him as a potential starting point guard as they look to rebound from a disappointing season that saw them miss the NCAA tournament. The move adds another compelling layer to the already heated in-state rivalry between two programs both working to return to national relevance.
For Notre Dame fans, there's an understandable sense of tension. Burton is just one of several key contributors from last season's roster to leave the program this offseason, raising questions about the direction of the Irish program.
But for Burton, the next chapter is set. South Bend to Bloomington—the Hoosiers just got a proven scorer and a local legend.
