Big news out of Bloomington: former Notre Dame guard Markus Burton is officially a Hoosier. The 5-foot-11 point guard, a two-time All-ACC selection, announced his commitment to Indiana and second-year head coach Darian DeVries, giving the program a major boost in the backcourt.
Burton, who was limited to just 10 games last season due to a left ankle injury, still managed to average an impressive 18.5 points, 3.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting nearly 49% from the floor. When healthy, he's a proven scorer and playmaker—something Indiana fans will be thrilled to see in Assembly Hall.
His resume speaks for itself. Burton was the 2023 IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball Award winner and finished his Notre Dame career with 1,315 points, 259 assists, and 123 steals across 69 games. He shot 43.8% from the field and 33.2% from three-point range over three seasons. In 2024-25, he led the ACC in scoring with 23.5 points per game and earned second team All-ACC honors. As a freshman in 2023-24, he was named ACC Rookie of the Year after averaging 17.5 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.9 steals.
Burton is one of two top-25 transfer portal additions for DeVries this cycle, and he brings serious in-state pedigree. A standout at Mishawaka Penn High School, he scored 2,273 career points—good for 20th all-time in Indiana history—and was a first team AP All-State selection.
He joins an already loaded transfer class for the Hoosiers. Indiana has added six transfers total, including Duke's Darren Harris (6-6 forward), Villanova's Bryce Lindsey (6-3 guard), Georgia Tech's Jaeden Mustaf (6-5 guard), Alabama's Aiden Sherrill (6-11 forward), and SMU's Samet Yigitoglu (7-2 center). With Burton running the point, this squad has the pieces to make some noise in the Big Ten.
