In a major offseason move that has Indiana Hoosiers fans buzzing, former Notre Dame guard Markus Burton has officially committed to Indiana, head coach Darian DeVries announced on Monday. The 5-foot-11 point guard, a two-time All-ACC selection, is one of the top transfer portal additions this cycle and joins a revamped Hoosiers roster under DeVries in his second season at the helm.

Burton's journey to Bloomington comes after a standout—but injury-shortened—junior year with the Fighting Irish. Limited to just 10 games due to a left ankle injury, he still averaged an impressive 18.5 points, 3.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, shooting nearly 49% from the field. His explosive scoring ability was on full display in the 2024-25 season, when he led the ACC in scoring with 23.5 points per game and earned second-team All-ACC honors.

Over his 69-game Notre Dame career, Burton amassed 1,315 points, 259 assists, and 123 steals, posting averages of 19.1 points, 3.8 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. He was also named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2023-24, leading all conference freshmen in both scoring (17.5 ppg) and steals (1.9 spg).

A local Indiana product, Burton starred at Mishawaka Penn High School, where he scored 2,273 career points—ranking 20th all-time in state history—and earned first-team all-state honors from the Associated Press. He was also named the 2023 IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball, cementing his status as one of the state's all-time greats.

Burton is the sixth transfer to join Indiana this offseason, following a wave of talent that includes 6-6 forward Darren Harris (Duke), 6-3 guard Bryce Lindsey (Villanova), 6-5 guard Jaeden Mustaf (Georgia Tech), 6-11 forward Aiden Sherrill (Alabama), and 7-2 center Samet Yigitoglu (SMU). With this infusion of experience and firepower, the Hoosiers are shaping up to be a formidable force in the Big Ten.

For Indiana fans, Burton's arrival is a homecoming of sorts—a dynamic, proven scorer who knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. As the summer workouts approach, all eyes will be on how this revamped roster gels, but one thing is clear: the Hoosiers just got a whole lot more dangerous.
