When it comes to the Boston Celtics' future, one former NBA star has a clear message: don't trade Jaylen Brown. Vernon Maxwell, who spent 13 seasons in the league, made his stance known during a recent appearance on the "All The Smoke" podcast.
"Boston, keep Jaylen Brown around... Keep Jaylen Brown around," Maxwell emphasized. "Now, y'all get rid of that (expletive), there's gonna be some problems over there."
The debate over Brown's future has been a hot topic this offseason, with some suggesting the Celtics could package him in a blockbuster deal for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. But Maxwell isn't buying it, and he's not alone.
Podcast host and former NBA player Matt Barnes echoed Maxwell's sentiments, noting that Brown's value goes beyond just stats. "Two seasons removed from winning a championship. The only way I see, if I'm Boston that Jaylen Brown moves is if I get Giannis," Barnes said. "I don't think there's another player in the league that is tradeable that I'm giving up Jaylen Brown for. If it's Giannis, I'm definitely considering it. But if I'm Boston, I'm trying to run it back with the same team."
The logic is sound. Brown and Jayson Tatum have already proven they can win it all together, capturing the 2024 NBA title. While Giannis is undeniably a generational talent when healthy, he's also older and carries a higher injury risk. Would trading a proven championship duo for an aging superstar really be worth it?
As the Celtics weigh their options, one thing is clear: breaking up the "Jays" could be a gamble that reshapes the franchise for years to come. Whether Boston decides to run it back or chase a bigger name, the basketball world will be watching closely.
