When you think of legendary figures in women's basketball, few names carry the weight of Rick Insell. The former Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) head coach just added another major honor to his already overflowing trophy case: the 2026 Pat Summitt Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

Insell, who hung up his clipboard after the 2025-26 season at age 74, didn't just coach basketball for 49 years—he defined excellence at every level. His journey is a masterclass in building a winning culture, starting long before he ever set foot on a college court.

It all began in 1978 at Shelbyville Central High School, where Insell turned the Golden Eaglettes into a dynasty. Over 28 years, he racked up 774 wins, including an astonishing national-record 110-game winning streak. During that run, Shelbyville captured four consecutive state titles (1989-1992) and two USA TODAY national championships (1989 and 1991). He was named National Coach of the Year four times, earning nods from USA TODAY and Converse.

When Insell moved to the college ranks at MTSU, the winning didn't stop. Over 21 seasons, he became the program's all-time winningest coach with 506 victories. He led the Blue Raiders to 21 straight postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA Tournament bids and multiple conference championships. That makes him the first basketball coach ever to win more than 500 games at both the high school and college levels—a feat that speaks to his adaptability and relentless drive.

This latest honor from the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame places Insell alongside the sport's most revered figures. It's a fitting tribute to a coach who has already been enshrined in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, the National High School Hall of Fame, the Blue Raider Sports Hall of Fame, and the CUSA Hall of Fame, among others.

Insell's legacy isn't just about wins and titles—it's about the generations of players he inspired and the standard he set for what's possible in women's basketball. For fans of the game, his story is a reminder that greatness is built one season, one player, one championship at a time.
