In a sudden twist that has Butler basketball fans buzzing, former Bulldogs point guard Aaron Thompson is stepping away from his newly announced role at Hinkle Fieldhouse—just weeks after accepting the position.
Thompson, who was named Butler's Director of Player Development under first-year head coach Ronald Nored on April 13, is now heading back to George Washington University to resume his duties as an assistant coach. The move was first reported by Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 and later confirmed by the IndyStar.
For Thompson, a Maryland native, this is a return to familiar territory. He began his coaching career at George Washington in 2023 as the Director of Player Development before being elevated to assistant coach in 2024. Now, he's rejoining head coach Chris Caputo's staff in the same capacity—a decision that brings him back to the nation's capital after less than a month in Indianapolis.
The timing is notable, as Thompson was expected to be a key piece of Nored's revamped coaching lineup. That staff already includes holdovers from former coach Thad Matta's tenure—general manager/assistant coach Tony Bollier and assistant coach Jon Diebler—along with newly hired assistants Kotie Kimble (formerly of Furman), Jalen Courtney-Williams (from LSU), and former Butler player and assistant coach Emerson Kampen.
Thompson's departure leaves a sudden opening on Nored's staff, but it also underscores the deep ties that bind the coaching world—especially for a player who, after a standout career at Butler, is quickly making a name for himself on the sidelines.
