One of the first to recognize his potential was none other than Javier Saviola, the former Barcelona star who served as assistant coach for the club's Juvenil A team when Yamal first broke through. Saviola played a key role in developing several current first-team stars, including Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, and Hector Fort (currently on loan at Elche).

In a recent interview with SPORT, Saviola shared his thoughts on that golden generation of talent, with a special focus on Yamal's explosive emergence. "We saw Lamine as different from the rest, especially in the way he covered ground," Saviola recalled. "When you see players like Messi—whom I watched when I was 12 or 13—you recognize it immediately. You've been in football long enough to know."

Saviola emphasized that Yamal's footballing ability was never a concern. "When such a young player shows something different, especially rare qualities at that age, you know there's something special. That's exactly what happened with Lamine," he said. "We weren't worried about his skills on the pitch. Our real challenge was managing his development, because we knew he had a real chance of making it into Barça's first team."

While Yamal has rightfully earned the spotlight, Saviola was quick to note that he was part of an exceptional group. "Alongside Yamal, there were also Hector Fort and two or three other players. It was truly an extraordinary process," he explained. Saviola also credited former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez for recognizing the young talents and bringing them into the senior squad. "Xavi spotted it straight away and asked us for references on him. From then on, we started working with him, and we were confident he could make the leap."
