The race for the flag football crown is officially on! Today, eight determined teams across the North Country hit the field to kick off the sectional playoffs, with dreams of advancing to the next round—and perhaps beyond—hanging in the balance.

From Saranac to Plattsburgh, Beekmantown to Champlain, the action promises to be electric as squads battle to keep their seasons alive. At the top of the bracket sits the undefeated NCCS Cougars, who finished the regular season a perfect 13-0. As the No. 1 seed, they’ve set the standard, but every challenger is hungry to write their own story.

No. 2 Saranac took some early-season lumps but has since found its stride, setting up a potential championship showdown with the Cougars. Meanwhile, Beekmantown—last year’s sectional champion and a Final Four participant—faced growing pains early as they worked to replace key starters. But like the Spartans, they’ve righted the ship and are playoff-ready.

Keep an eye on the No. 4 Plattsburgh vs. No. 5 NAC matchup, which could be the day’s must-watch game. Both teams have shown marked improvement over the past year, and this clash could go down to the wire.

Don’t count out the underdogs either. No. 6 Keene, No. 7 Schroon Lake, and No. 8 Moriah each face tall tasks against the Eagles, Spartans, and Cougars, respectively—but in playoff flag football, anything can happen.

Here’s the schedule: Quarterfinals kick off today, with semifinals set for Tuesday. Games will be played at the higher seed’s home field. Today’s action features Plattsburgh vs. NAC and Beekmantown vs. Keene at 4:30 p.m., followed by Saranac vs. Schroon and NCCS vs. Moriah at 7 p.m.

Mark your calendars for the championship game on May 22 at AuSable Valley Central School, with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. AVCS will also host a regional final between Section II and Section VII the following week.

Whether you’re cheering from the stands or gearing up for your own game, this is the time of year when legends are made. Let the playoffs begin!
