The Atlanta Falcons are heading into a pivotal offseason, and the biggest question mark remains under center: Who will be the starting quarterback when the 2026 season kicks off?
Under new head coach Kevin Stefanski, the Falcons are navigating a unique quarterback puzzle. Two names are at the forefront—Michael Penix Jr. and newly signed free agent Tua Tagovailoa—but the depth chart is anything but settled.
Penix Jr. is currently working his way back from a torn ACL, which has put his availability for training camp in question. As it stands today, if a game were played, Tagovailoa would likely take the first snap. But the Falcons are taking a patient approach, and that could change as the summer progresses.
Falcons president of football operations Matt Ryan recently shed some light on the situation during an appearance on 680 The Fan. "As far as expectations, we don't really know what to expect at the beginning of training camp," Ryan admitted. "But I think with the way both of those guys are working and the conversations we've had with both of them... I think the way both those guys have started the offseason, I think, will put us in a good spot."
The key factor, of course, is Penix Jr.'s rehab. By all accounts, he's moving through the recovery checklist steadily, which is a positive sign for the Falcons. However, the franchise is wisely treading carefully. The last thing Atlanta wants is to rush him back only to see a setback. A slow-and-steady approach seems to be the plan, with the team giving Penix Jr. extra runway to ensure he's fully ready before taking the field.
For now, the quarterback battle remains a waiting game. But with two talented arms in the mix and a new coaching staff at the helm, the Falcons' offensive future is one of the most intriguing storylines to watch this offseason.
