In a decisive move that underscores Indiana's deep-rooted basketball traditions, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) voted overwhelmingly against a proposal to introduce shot clocks for the 2028-29 season. The measure was rejected with a 17-1 vote on Monday, marking a clear divide between preserving the game's heritage and modernizing the sport.

The proposal, submitted by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA), aimed to bring the Hoosier State in line with a growing national trend. Just hours earlier, New Jersey became the 33rd state to approve shot clocks for high school basketball, passing a narrow 170-166 vote to implement them by the 2027-28 season. Indiana, however, chose a different path.

"Tradition certainly carries a lot here in Indiana. Maybe more than other states," IHSAA commissioner Paul Neidig told WISH-TV, reflecting the sentiment that swayed the decision. The board's vote mirrored the opinions of school administrators across the state, with only 79 in favor and 245 opposed during recent meetings. Interestingly, a survey of boys' and girls' coaches by the IBCA showed 70% support for the change, highlighting a disconnect between those on the sidelines and those governing the game.

A key factor in the rejection was the estimated $10,000 per school cost to install shot clocks in each gymnasium—a significant expense for many districts. For now, Indiana high school basketball will continue without a shot clock, preserving the fast-paced, up-tempo style that has defined the sport in the state for generations. The matter can be revisited next year, but for the 2028-29 season, tradition wins the day.
