In a major summer transfer update, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona will not be pursuing Anthony Gordon, with the La Liga champions deeming the Newcastle United star too expensive for their budget. This opens the door for other top European clubs to make their move.
According to the renowned transfer insider, the race for the versatile forward now narrows to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and unnamed Premier League clubs. Liverpool, long-time admirers of Gordon's dynamic attacking style, are understood to be among those keenly interested.
"The reality is that Barcelona have different kinds of targets, and Anthony Gordon is going to be crazy expensive for Barca," Romano stated on his YouTube channel. "So this is not the kind of signing that Barca are looking for. Don't forget, Bayern and Premier League clubs are on Anthony Gordon. Barca are also looking at alternative options for the winger position."
This development is a significant boost for Liverpool, who could desperately use Gordon's versatility in their squad. With Hugo Ekitike set for a long-term spell on the sidelines due to injury, the Reds lack depth in attack. Gordon, who can operate across the front line, would be an ideal fit—especially since pursuing another out-and-out striker would create unnecessary competition with a fully fit Alexander Isak down the line.
However, Liverpool may face an uphill battle. Bayern Munich appear to be in the driver's seat for Gordon's signature, and the lingering tension from the Alexander Isak saga last summer hasn't helped the Reds' cause. As things stand, the Premier League side will need to act decisively if they hope to overtake the Bundesliga champions in this high-stakes transfer race.
