Cristiano Ronaldo's blockbuster move to Juventus in 2018 was a seismic moment for Serie A, but its legacy is complex. While intended to propel the Bianconeri to Champions League glory, the transfer is now often cited as a factor in the club's subsequent financial and sporting challenges. Yet, the architect of the deal, former sporting director Fabio Paratici, stands by the decision without regret.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Paratici reflected on the ambitious gamble. Juventus, having reached two Champions League finals in the preceding years, saw Ronaldo as the final piece of the puzzle. "Precious for Juve, important for everyone," Paratici stated, drawing a parallel to José Mourinho's impact at Roma. He believes such superstars elevate an entire league.

The dream, however, unraveled quickly. A shock quarter-final defeat to Ajax in their first campaign together—a loss Paratici admits "still sticks in my mind"—set the tone. Financially, the massive investment became unsustainable, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to the club's well-documented troubles.

Paratici offered a fascinating tactical insight into the unintended consequences of Ronaldo's arrival. He suggested the Portuguese star's relentless goal-scoring—averaging roughly a goal per game—created a sense of complacency. "Cristiano made life too easy for his teammates, who had already won so much," Paratici claimed, explaining subsequent managerial changes as attempts to "try a shake-up."

Addressing rumors of dressing-room friction, Paratici dismissed any major issues between Ronaldo and managers Max Allegri or Maurizio Sarri, praising Allegri's intelligence and Sarri's adaptability in securing a Scudetto. Ultimately, Paratici's defense pins the transfer's shortcomings not on Ronaldo's performance, but on the club's overarching structure and external circumstances that prevented them from building an ideal team around him.
