Joe Allen, the former Wales international and Swansea City legend, is set to leave his coaching role at the Championship club after Saturday's season finale against Charlton Athletic. The 36-year-old's departure marks the end of a brief but impactful stint on the coaching staff, one that was always intended to be temporary.

Allen initially hung up his boots last May, retiring as a player after a distinguished career. But he made a swift return to the Liberty Stadium in November 2025, joining fellow club icon Leon Britton to support newly appointed head coach Vitor Matos. The duo stepped in when Matos faced work permit issues bringing his own staff from former club Maritimo. Even after Matos' Portuguese assistants—Diogo Medeiros, Toze Mendes, and Goncalo Ricca—along with Ryan Maye from Aston Villa, arrived in December, Allen and Britton remained part of the setup.

Allen's exit coincides with that of head of goalkeeping Martyn Margetson, as Swansea reshapes its backroom team. Earlier this month, Andy Mangan joined as a first-team consultant on a deal through the end of the season, with Matos keeping tight-lipped about whether the former Bristol Rovers assistant will stay beyond the current campaign.

For fans, Allen's departure is a poignant moment. The Pembrokeshire-born midfielder came through Swansea's academy, helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League in 2011 before earning a big-money move to Liverpool. After four years at Anfield and six with Stoke City, he returned to the Swans in 2022 for a second spell, retiring with nearly 600 club appearances and 77 caps for Wales. His legacy as one of the club's finest sons is secure, both on the pitch and in the dugout.
