When a 20-year-old striker says his coach has given him "unconditional confidence," you know there's a special bond at work. Inter Milan's Pio Esposito isn't just talking about any coach—he's talking about Cristian Chivu, the man who's been guiding him since he was just a kid in the Under-14s.

Esposito's breakout season has been nothing short of remarkable. In his first full campaign with Inter's first team, the young Italian has not only won the Serie A title but also contributed six goals and four assists in 33 league appearances. Across all competitions, he's racked up 15 goal involvements in 46 games—numbers that would impress any veteran, let alone a rising star.

But what makes this story even better? The foundation was laid years ago. "I've known him since I was with the U14s—it was his first ever year as a coach," Esposito shared in an interview with Cronache di spogliatoio. "He already had me playing. I immediately took a liking to him, and a beautiful bond was born."

That bond only grew stronger when they reunited in Inter's Primavera youth team. Chivu handed Esposito the captain's armband—even though he was technically "underage"—and the young striker repaid the faith in spectacular fashion. "The first time against Cagliari, I scored a hat-trick," he recalls with a smile.

Fast forward to today, and Esposito is now a nailed-on member of the Italy national team. He credits Chivu's arrival as Inter's head coach last season as a turning point. "We continued to talk over the years, and it was lucky that we got to meet again this year. His presence has been decisive. He's given me unconditional confidence since day one."

It's easy to forget that Esposito only made his senior Inter debut less than a year ago, during the FIFA Club World Cup in June 2025. "I felt like I was in a movie when we flew to America," he says. "I was there with them, in the hotel, with the group. I worked alongside the champions I watched on TV."

And speaking of champions, Esposito has nothing but respect for Inter captain Lautaro Martinez. "His numbers speak for themselves," the young striker states simply—a nod to the Argentine's consistent excellence leading the line for the Nerazzurri.
