The Alabama Crimson Tide made some serious noise in the transfer portal this offseason, and according to ESPN, one of their newest additions might just be the team's most under-the-radar player heading into 2026. After a tough Rose Bowl loss, the Tide didn't waste any time retooling. They shored up the offensive line, fortified the trenches, and—most notably—added a key piece to the heart of their defense. That piece? Inside linebacker Sam Woodson, a transfer from Virginia Tech who's already turning heads in Tuscaloosa.

Woodson isn't exactly a household name, but his resume speaks volumes. During his three seasons with the Hokies, he racked up over 150 tackles and earned a spot among the top 50 players at his position in the transfer portal rankings. ESPN's Harry Lyles Jr. explains why Woodson might be flying under the radar: "He was a key contributor on Brent Pry's defense at Virginia Tech, and he's just a damn good athlete. He used to be a year-round competitive swimmer from age 6 to 14. He originally played wide receiver, but switched to defense because the lines for those positions at youth camps were too long. He's willing to do whatever it takes on the field, and he should fit in nicely at Alabama."

And fit in he has. Although Woodson arrived as a coverage specialist, he's reportedly bulked up to nearly 240 pounds, and coaches can't stop raving about his off-the-charts intangibles. With the departures of Deontae Lawson and Justin Jefferson to the NFL, Woodson has stepped into the "green dot" role as the defensive leader. His leadership has been on full display since day one, and his tangible skills—covering space, chasing down ball carriers, and stacking and shedding blocks as he adds lean mass—make him a perfect fit for Kane Wommack's aggressive 4-2-5 swarm defense.

The more time Woodson spends in this system, the more he looks like the real deal. For Alabama fans, he's not just a transfer—he's a difference-maker waiting to happen.
