The pressure is mounting at Anfield as Liverpool's season continues to unravel, but one ESPN pundit has thrown a curveball into the debate over Arne Slot's future: sometimes the devil you know is safer than the one you don't.

After a dismal campaign for last year's Premier League champions, the Reds' head coach finds himself under increasing scrutiny. The frustration boiled over during last weekend's tense draw with Chelsea, where an air of mutiny hung over the stadium. With the club sliding down the table, many fans are already looking toward a potential change in the dugout.

Xabi Alonso remains the name on everyone's lips as the dream replacement—a club legend who has worked wonders at Bayer Leverkusen. But he's not the only candidate being floated. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has also emerged as a serious contender, with his name gaining traction among fans and pundits alike.

However, during a recent segment on ESPN FC, former professional footballer Jan Aage Fjortoft issued a stark warning. When a viewer asked whether sticking with Slot could mean missing out on top alternatives like Alonso or Nagelsmann, Fjortoft didn't hold back. He argued that swapping one risk for another might not be the smartest play.

"What about Julian Nagelsmann? What a risk that would've been!" Fjortoft said. "The risk of keeping Slot, you have to weigh that up against the risk of getting Julian Nagelsmann. I can't see that. I think I would prefer to go with Slot than with an alternative such as Nagelsmann. That's a risk, too."

It's a bold take, especially given Nagelsmann's impressive résumé. At just 38, he has already taken Hoffenheim into the Champions League for the first time, guided RB Leipzig to the semi-finals of Europe's elite competition, and won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich. His tactical acumen and youth make him an intriguing prospect—but Fjortoft's words have given Liverpool's hierarchy plenty to think about.

The debate is far from settled. When Nagelsmann's name was first raised by journalist Bence Bocsak on social media, the reaction from Liverpool fans was split right down the middle. Some pleaded for the German to be hired immediately, while others were dead set against the idea of him taking over at Anfield.

As the season winds down, Liverpool face a pivotal decision. Do they back Slot to turn things around, or take a gamble on a high-profile replacement? For now, the message from at least one pundit is clear: not every shiny new option is worth the price of admission.
