A two-out sixth inning rally propelled Derry over Beaver Area in the first round of the WPIAL 4A high school softball playoffs.

In high-stakes postseason softball, every play matters—and sometimes, it's the little mistakes that make the biggest difference. That was the hard lesson for Beaver Area in their WPIAL 4A first-round matchup against Derry, where a late-game collapse turned a promising start into an 8-3 loss on Monday at Gateway High School.

The No. 8 Bobcats (9-8) came out swinging, building an early two-run lead that had fans and teammates believing in an upset. But No. 9 Derry (11-4) had other plans. After evening the score in the top of the fifth inning, the Trojans waited for their moment—and it came in the sixth.

With two quick outs, Derry's rally seemed unlikely. Then Kameryn Dunlap singled, Paris Clayton walked, and Marie Razpotnik loaded the bases. Francesca DePalma stepped up and lined a ball into left field that was dropped, allowing two runs to score. The floodgates opened, and one batter later, Lylah O'Donnell reached on another error when the third baseman bobbled the ball. Suddenly, a tight game had slipped away.

"Anytime that you can get on and score runs off of errors is good for a team," said Beaver Area head coach Amy Haggart. "I don't think our kids hung their heads at all though. They fought to get out of that inning and tried to get back into the game."

And fight they did—especially at the plate. The Bobcats spread out 10 hits across all seven innings, putting runners on base every frame. But the story of the day was missed opportunities. Time and again, Beaver Area left runners stranded in scoring position, including a gut-wrenching moment in the bottom of the sixth with runners at second and third and the team down just two runs.

"At the end of the day, I think we just needed some better pitch selection," Haggart reflected. "We just needed to look for some better pitches. It was not for a lack of effort, though. These kids fought the whole game."

In the circle, pitcher Jaedyn Brown gave everything she had, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out two. Her performance was exactly what a team needs in the playoffs—but sometimes, even a great outing isn't enough when the errors add up. For Beaver Area, the season ends earlier than they hoped, but the lessons from this hard-fought battle will carry into next year.
