The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant coaching change, parting ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch following a disappointing first-round exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs. The decision was reported Thursday by ESPN, The Athletic, and the Sports Network, marking the end of a tenure that brought both incredible highs and heartbreaking lows.

Knoblauch, who took the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, posted an impressive 135-77-21 regular-season record over his three years behind the bench. In his debut season, the team went 49-27-6, lighting the lamp for the fourth-most goals in the NHL while allowing the 10th-fewest. The following year, they were nearly as dominant at 48-29-5, ranking 11th in scoring and 14th in defense.

But for all that regular-season success, the ultimate prize remained elusive. Led by future Hall of Famers Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers fell to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final in back-to-back postseasons—a gut-wrenching outcome for a franchise with championship aspirations.

This season, the Oilers finished 41-30-11, scoring the sixth-most goals in the league but also surrendering the eighth-most. They showed fight early in their first-round series against the Anaheim Ducks, winning Game 1, but then dropped three straight games. A valiant Game 5 victory wasn't enough, as the Ducks closed out the series with a 5-2 win on April 30 in Anaheim.

Interestingly, the Oilers had signed Knoblauch to a three-year contract extension back in October, a deal set to begin in 2026-27 and run through the 2028-29 season. Now, the franchise will begin its search for a new leader to finally push McDavid and company over the top.
