The wait is finally over for Jauan Jennings, but if you're a San Francisco 49ers fan hoping for a compensatory pick in return, don't hold your breath.

The former 49ers wide receiver has officially signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings worth $8 million, with the potential to earn up to $13 million through incentives. It's a solid payday for Jennings, but here's the kicker: the 49ers won't receive any compensatory draft picks for his departure.

Why? Two key reasons, according to analyst Jason Hurley. First, the signing happened after the April 27 deadline. Once the NFL Draft kicks off, any unrestricted free agent signed by a new team is automatically removed from the league's compensatory pick formula. That alone closes the book on the matter.

Second, even if the timing had been different, the 49ers' own free-agent signing of Mike Evans would have canceled out any potential compensation. Evans' deal—worth $20.1 million per year—would have outweighed Jennings' contract in the formula. So, no draft pick windfall here.

This move has been brewing for a while. When the 49ers signed Evans (and later Christian Kirk), Jennings' role in San Francisco became uncertain. The writing was on the wall. Then, after the team drafted rookie De'Zhaun Stribling, the wide receiver room got so crowded that Jennings may have been left without a seat at the table.

Now, Jennings heads to Minnesota on a one-year prove-it deal. It's a fresh start and a chance to show he's worth more than that $20 million price tag he carried earlier in free agency. If he delivers for the Vikings, he could be looking at a much bigger payday when 2027 free agency rolls around. For the 49ers, it's simply a case of moving on and trusting their roster depth.
