The Indianapolis Colts may not be the talk of the town in preseason power rankings, but don't count them out just yet. While sportsbooks have set their projected win total at a modest 8.5, there's a glimmer of hope in their schedule that could make for an exciting season ahead.

According to Sharp Football Analysis, the Colts boast the ninth-easiest schedule in the NFL this coming season. That's a significant advantage for a team that's been hovering around the .500 mark, finishing 9-8 in 2023 and 8-9 in each of the two seasons prior. In a league where every game counts, a favorable schedule can be the difference between watching the playoffs from home and making a run.

But here's where it gets interesting: Sharp cautions that judging a team's schedule strength solely on last year's records is a rookie mistake. The real picture comes from factoring in offseason changes—new personnel, coaching shifts, and injury comebacks. Sportsbooks use this more nuanced approach, which is why the Colts' 8.5-win projection might actually be conservative.

Sharp also points out that luck—those tipped passes turning into interceptions or unexpected fumbles—can't be carried over from one season to the next. So, if the Colts had some bad breaks in 2023, there's room for things to swing their way in 2024.

The proof is in the playoff pudding. In 2025, only two of the eight teams with the toughest schedules (per Sharp) made the postseason: the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams. Even powerhouses like the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings couldn't overcome their brutal slates. That's a wake-up call for any team, and a reason for Colts fans to feel optimistic.

With a young core led by quarterback Anthony Richardson (the No. 4 pick in 2023) and defensive end Laiatu Latu (the No. 15 pick in 2024), Indianapolis has the talent to capitalize on a lighter schedule. Whether they can turn that opportunity into a playoff berth will be one of the season's most intriguing storylines.
