The NHL Draft lottery is Tuesday night from New Jersey

The 2026 NHL Draft Lottery is finally here, and Tuesday night's winner will have their sights set on one of the most electrifying prospects to come through college hockey in years: Penn State Nittany Lions forward Gavin McKenna. The Canadian-born star is the consensus top prize in a draft class that could reshape a franchise for the next decade.

The lottery takes place tonight from the NHL Network studio in Secaucus, New Jersey, and it's a two-phase event. The first drawing determines the No. 1 overall pick, and the second decides the No. 2 pick. Only the top 11 seeds are eligible to win the lottery, while teams sitting at Nos. 12 through 16 can only climb as high as second or sixth overall, respectively. The draft itself is set for June 26-27 in Buffalo.

No team enters with more at stake than the Vancouver Canucks. After finishing with a league-worst 58 points, the Canucks are deep in a rebuild and still searching for a new general manager after parting ways with Patrik Allvin. Vancouver holds a 25.5% chance of winning the lottery and is listed at +270 odds at FanDuel (equivalent to 27%). Remarkably, the Canucks have never actually picked first overall—though they technically owned the top pick in 1999. Then-GM Brian Burke famously traded it to the Atlanta Thrashers so he could select Daniel and Henrik Sedin together at Nos. 2 and 3. Both Sedins, now Hall of Famers, will represent the team at the lottery tonight.

The Chicago Blackhawks, who finished with the second-fewest points in the league, have a 13.5% shot at the top spot and are priced at +550 (15.4%). Chicago last won the lottery in 2023, and fans are eager to see the team return to contention. With McKenna's blend of elite skating, high hockey IQ, and scoring touch, the winner of Tuesday night's lottery could be adding a true franchise cornerstone to their lineup—and the perfect centerpiece for a new era of team gear and jerseys.
