Exciting news is brewing in Chapel Hill! Former UNC basketball star Deon Thompson is expected to join Michael Malone's coaching staff as a graduate assistant, bringing a championship pedigree back to the Tar Heels' sideline.

Thompson, a key member of UNC's 2009 national championship team, is poised to trade his jersey for a clipboard. The 37-year-old forward, who played four seasons under legendary coach Roy Williams, was spotted at Malone's introductory press conference in early April—a clear sign of the impending move.

During his college career from 2006 to 2010, Thompson was a force in the paint, appearing in 152 games and averaging 9.3 points and 4.9 rebounds. He finished his Tar Heel tenure with 1,414 points, 743 rebounds, and 141 blocks. The 6-foot-9 forward started 37 of 38 games during that championship season, contributing nine points and three rebounds in the title-clinching win over Michigan State.

After graduating from UNC in 2010, Thompson took his talents overseas, playing 15 professional seasons across 13 different countries and averaging 10.3 points and 5 rebounds. Now, he's expected to return to campus to pursue classes at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School while mentoring the next generation of Tar Heels.

Thompson joins a coaching staff that already bleeds Carolina blue. Pat Sullivan and Sean May—both former Tar Heels—are holdovers from Hubert Davis' staff, while Chuck Martin, formerly of Arkansas, rounds out the lineup as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

For fans looking to rep the Tar Heels in style, this coaching shakeup is the perfect excuse to grab some fresh UNC gear. Whether you're cheering from the Dean Dome or your living room, show your support as the program builds on its rich tradition with a new-look staff.
