The Kansas City Chiefs made a major addition to their coaching staff this offseason, bringing in former NFL star DeMarco Murray as their new running backs coach. The 38-year-old, who previously spent four seasons developing talent at the University of Oklahoma, recently sat down with the Chiefs media team to share his vision for working with young running back Brashard Smith.
"There's going to be challenges, but I'm looking forward to it," Murray said with enthusiasm. "I know he hasn't had a lot of time at the position. But everyone I've talked to in this building is extremely excited about him—his work ethic, his versatility, and what he can do when the ball is in his hands."
Murray emphasized the importance of his role in Smith's development, particularly because the rookie is still learning the nuances of the running back position. "For him not having the background of being a running back, that's where my job comes in. It's very important to spend some extra time with him and develop him—from eyes to hands to feet and things of that nature. He's already a really good athlete. There's just some things to add to his tool belt to help him become a better running back."
For those who remember Murray's playing days, this mentorship should come as no surprise. During his seven-year NFL career, the former Oklahoma standout amassed an impressive 7,174 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns, earning three Pro Bowl selections. His 2014 season with the Dallas Cowboys was particularly memorable, as he was named the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league in rushing.
Smith, meanwhile, showed flashes of promise during his rookie campaign. While he recorded 151 yards on the ground, it was his versatility in the passing game that caught the coaching staff's attention. With Murray's guidance, the young back appears poised to take his game to the next level.
