When it comes to coaching NFL talent, few understand a two-way player better than Deion Sanders. That's why the Colorado State head coach is voicing frustration over the Jacksonville Jaguars' silence regarding Travis Hunter's development.

Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who excelled at both cornerback and wide receiver during his legendary career, coached Hunter in college. Yet, the Jaguars haven't reached out to pick his brain on how to best handle the versatile rookie.

"Even a guy like Travis Hunter, being drafted to Jacksonville, and I've had him for the last three," Sanders said on "The Barbershop" podcast. "Don't you think you would want to talk to me to let me know, to ask me how — what gets him going and what backs him off? You wouldn't want to know that?"

This isn't the first time Sanders has felt overlooked. Earlier this month, he noted the Cleveland Browns never contacted him about coaching his son, Shedeur Sanders. However, he did mention a scheduled meeting with new head coach Todd Monken in 2026.

Hunter, selected No. 2 overall by the Jaguars in 2025 after a trade-up, had a rocky rookie season. Limited to seven games due to a knee injury, he recorded 298 receiving yards and one touchdown. Defensively, he showed promise, allowing a 50% completion rate and a 68.3 passer rating when targeted.

Given Sanders' unique perspective as both a Hall of Fame player and Hunter's college coach, the Jaguars' silence seems like a missed opportunity. Looking ahead to 2026, Jacksonville plans to keep Hunter on both sides of the ball, with general manager James Gladstone indicating an increased focus on cornerback duties.

For a player with Hunter's potential, getting input from a mentor who has walked the same path could be the key to unlocking his full NFL potential.
