Deion Sanders addresses Shilo's "altercation" with Mary Kay Cabot

In a recent podcast appearance, Colorado coach Deion Sanders covered a wide variety of topics.

In a recent appearance on The Barbershop with Garrett Bush, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders opened up about a wide range of topics—including the much-discussed incident involving his son, Shilo Sanders, and veteran Cleveland Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot.

For those who missed it, the controversy began when Cabot shared her opinion that the Browns should name Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback "ASAP." Shilo, a Colorado safety and the son of Coach Prime, responded with a comment that quickly drew attention: "Go make a sandwich, Mary." He later clarified that his frustration wasn't with female reporters in general, but with what he saw as opinion-based reporting lacking factual backing. "If it's reported, it's reported," Shilo said. "You have facts, you have news. But when it comes to your opinion... it makes you look crazy, like you don't know what you're talking about."

On the podcast, Deion Sanders defended his son's actions, framing them as a brother protecting his sibling—quarterback Shedeur Sanders. "We don't talk about nobody. We don't do nothing to nobody," Deion said. "I know Shilo had a little altercation that he spoke up for his brother. You've got to understand, man, that's his brother. And God bless Mary Kay's soul, that's his brother." He went on to acknowledge the changing landscape of media, noting that today's athletes have more agency than in his own playing days. "Media is different today. I know a lot of people don't respect the old school. I do, because I grew up in that era that we didn't have a say so... But Shilo spoke up for his brother, and he was ridiculed for that."

To be fair, the criticism Shilo received wasn't for defending his brother—it was for how he chose to do it. While Coach Prime stands by his son's intent, the incident serves as a reminder that in today's sports media world, words carry weight, and even the most well-meaning defense can spark a conversation of its own.
