After nine seasons in Cleveland, Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku is heading to the West Coast. The veteran pass-catcher has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, marking his first foray into free agency since entering the league in 2017.
Selected by the Browns with the 29th overall pick, Njoku became a fixture in Cleveland’s offense—and a fan favorite. But after a career year in 2023 that earned him his first Pro Bowl nod, production has dipped over the last two seasons. Injuries played a role: Njoku missed five games in 2025 with a knee injury, finishing with just 293 receiving yards, his lowest total since 2020. Over the past two campaigns, he’s totaled 798 yards and nine touchdowns in 23 games.
Quarterback instability didn’t help either. In nine years with the Browns, Njoku caught touchdowns from 10 different signal-callers—including Kevin Hogan, Baker Mayfield, Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and Jameis Winston. That revolving door made consistency tough for any pass-catcher. Meanwhile, his 2025 absence opened the door for Cleveland to develop his eventual successor in third-round rookie Jordan Akins.
Now, Njoku gets a fresh start with Justin Herbert under center—a major upgrade in stability and arm talent. The Chargers are betting that a healthy Njoku can rediscover his 2023 form and become a red-zone weapon in their offense.
Njoku acknowledged his departure from Cleveland earlier this offseason with a heartfelt social media post: “Cleveland, first off, I love you. These 9 years have been a beautiful journey. I am so grateful for all the memories we shared together.”
For Chargers fans, the message is clear: a motivated, experienced tight end is ready to make an impact. And for Njoku, it’s a chance to prove his best football is still ahead.
