The Dallas Wings kicked off their season with a bang, taking down Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever in a thrilling opener. But since that high, it's been a steep downhill slide. After blowing a lead against the Atlanta Dream, the Wings stumbled again Thursday night, losing 90-86 and dropping to 1-2 on the young season. For a team with championship aspirations, this is not the start they envisioned.
This offseason, Dallas went all-in. They locked up All-Star Arike Ogunbowale, brought in 2025 Co-Defensive Player of the Year Alanna Smith, and drafted first overall for the second straight year. The message was clear: win now. Adding to the shakeup, they hired head coach Jose Fernandez to replace Chris Koclanes, hoping his leadership would steady the ship.
But through three games, the Wings are sinking. As of Friday morning, they rank fourth-worst in the league with a 110.2 defensive rating. After Thursday's loss, Fernandez didn't hold back in his post-game press conference, calling out what he sees as the root of the problem.
"There's selfishness in this locker room," Fernandez said, revealing what he told his players. "You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable for how you played. Don't get upset if you think you should have played more or didn't get the shots you wanted. Really good teams don't give a damn about that. They care about winning, because that's what matters."
Fernandez has faced some heat for bringing 2026 first-overall pick Azzi Fudd off the bench to start the season. But he's not backing down. For him, it's not about minutes—it's about making every second count. "Minutes here, minutes there. Whatever minutes Awak Kuier gets, with her size, she can protect the basket," he said. "Same for Maddy Siegrist, Alanna Smith, or Fudd. Just focus on what you can do with the time you're given."
For a team built to contend, the message is loud and clear: ego has no place on a winning roster. The question now is whether the Wings will listen before their season slips away.
