It was a tough night across the Cubs' minor league system, with every affiliate dropping their matchup. But while the scoreboard might not have been kind, there were still some standout performances worth celebrating—especially from a few rising stars who continue to shine.
Iowa Cubs Fall 4-1 to Nashville Sounds
The Triple-A Iowa Cubs couldn't get much going offensively, managing just one run in a 4-1 loss to Nashville. Starter Connor Noland took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings, striking out two while walking two and hitting a batter.
The lone bright spot came from outfielder Kevin Alcántara, who launched his league-leading 14th home run of the season in the second inning. Dubbed "The Jaguar," Alcántara continues to prove why he's one of the most exciting prospects in the system. First baseman Jonathon Long also had a solid night, going 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.
Knoxville Smokies Topped 9-5 by Columbus
The Double-A Smokies couldn't contain the Columbus Clingstones, falling 9-5. Grant Kipp struggled early, surrendering six runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings in the loss. He struck out five but walked two.
Offensively, shortstop Karson Simas showed off his power with two doubles in a 2-for-4 night, scoring twice and driving in a run. Designated hitter Alex Ramírez also contributed with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double and two RBIs. Center fielder Carter Trice added his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot in the sixth inning.
South Bend Cubs Stung 11-6 by Wisconsin
The High-A South Bend Cubs saw their pitching staff struggle early, falling behind quickly in an 11-6 loss to Wisconsin. Starter Eli Jerzembeck lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. Jackson Brockett provided some stability in relief, allowing just one run over 3.1 innings.
Shortstop Ty Southisene continues to impress, going 3 for 5 with an RBI double and three total RBIs. He also stole two bases and scored a run. Center fielder Kane Kepley showed his speed, reaching base four times with a hit and three walks while swiping three bags and scoring twice.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans Edged 3-1 by Augusta
The Single-A Pelicans couldn't get the bats going in a 3-1 loss to Augusta. Starter Pierce Coppola took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits over his outing.
Despite the tough night, there's plenty of reason for optimism as these young players continue to develop. Whether it's Alcántara's power surge, Southisene's all-around game, or Kepley's speed on the bases, the future is bright in the Cubs' system.
