Botafogo is facing mounting pressure behind the scenes as FIFA's latest transfer ban adds to a growing list of financial penalties. The club, already navigating a tense period, now has three sanctions stacked against it—raising serious questions about its future in Brazilian football.

This Monday (11), a new ban was confirmed, reigniting fears among supporters: could Botafogo actually lose points or face relegation in the Brazilian Championship due to unpaid transfer debts?

While FIFA's typical punishment for such debts is a transfer ban—preventing the club from registering new players—the governing body's Disciplinary Code leaves room for harsher measures. According to the regulations, a points deduction or even relegation to a lower division can be applied in cases of "persistent non-compliance."

In practical terms, this happens when a club goes through more than three full and consecutive transfer windows without resolving the issue, or in cases of repeated serious violations where the transfer ban loses its effect. The "indefinite-term" punishment handed down this Monday is a repeat offense, signaling deeper trouble.

This latest ban stems from Botafogo's failure to pay the second installment of an agreement with Atlanta United (USA) for the signing of Thiago Almada. The club had already been penalized for the same debt in December 2025, reached a settlement in February, but then failed to honor it.

And Almada's case is just the tip of the iceberg. Botafogo is currently carrying two other recent bans:

  • April 20: A debt with Ludogorets (Bulgaria) for the purchase of Rwan Cruz, valued at 8 million euros.
  • May 7: A debt with New York City (USA) for the signing of Santi Rodríguez, where installments under the 5 million dollar agreement went unpaid.

It's important to note that a points deduction or relegation doesn't happen overnight. For Botafogo to face these extreme punishments, the case must escalate to "persistent non-compliance." Under FIFA rules, this means the club must remain punished for more than three consecutive transfer windows without settling the debt.

Currently, Botafogo is already under a transfer ban—a warning shot that could turn into a devastating blow if the club doesn't act fast. For fans and stakeholders alike, the clock is ticking. Will Botafogo clear its debts and avoid a nightmare scenario, or is this the beginning of a deeper crisis?
