There's something special about coming home—and for Tom Michael, that feeling became impossible to ignore.
The Eastern Illinois athletic director had spent four seasons playing for legendary coach Lou Henson at Illinois, followed by 18 years as an administrator in Champaign. So when his Panthers basketball team opened back-to-back seasons at State Farm Center in 2022 and 2023, the memories came flooding back. But it was a football road trip in late August 2024 that truly shifted something inside him.
Walking through Memorial Stadium—a place he'd navigated countless times during his two-decade Illini career—Michael felt a familiar pull. The question lingered: What if he returned to the place that had shaped both his playing days and his professional life?
For a while, that question remained just a thought. Michael stayed focused on guiding Eastern Illinois through the relentless changes sweeping college athletics. But when Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman reached out last month to chat about the Illini's remarkable 2025-26 season and Final Four run, those conversations quickly turned serious.
The timing was perfect. Whitman needed to rebuild his administrative team after deputy athletic director Roger Denny left to lead Oklahoma's athletic department and chief commercial officer Tom Moreland accepted Toledo's AD position. Michael's experience—both on the court and in the front office—made him an ideal fit.
"When we came back to play football, it really hit me that I'd spent 23 years on this campus," Michael told reporters Friday, just days after being named Illinois' deputy athletic director. "That sparked something—maybe I'd like to be part of this level of college athletics again. I didn't know if it would ever work out, but I'm grateful Josh has given me this opportunity."
The connection between Michael and Whitman has remained strong over the past decade, with Michael regularly seeking Whitman's perspective on the challenges of leading athletic programs. Their initial talks in late March centered on celebrating Illinois' NCAA tournament success, but they quickly evolved into something more significant.
Now, Michael is preparing to step back onto the campus where his journey began—ready to write the next chapter of his story in orange and blue.
