Every NFL team loves a diamond in the rough, and the Indianapolis Colts may have found one in undrafted rookie linebacker West Weeks. The LSU product has already turned heads at rookie minicamp, catching the eye of assistant general manager Ed Dodds with his blend of size and speed.
"West, I know for a fact he's gonna make an impact on special teams because he's big and fast and he's done that before and he's looked good out here," Dodds said. "I mean, he's moving even better out here than he did on LSU tape."
For undrafted free agents, the path to a 53-man roster often runs through special teams. Weeks brings valuable experience in that department, having logged 454 career snaps on special teams over five college seasons—including 209 in 2023 alone. According to Pro Football Focus, he has contributed to five of six different special teams phases during his career.
Speed is another asset that could give Weeks an edge. His 4.56-second 40-yard dash time during pre-draft workouts is impressive for a linebacker and translates well to coverage units.
The Colts' linebacker room is shaping up with CJ Allen expected to anchor the MIKE position, while Akeem Davis-Gaither and Bryce Boettcher compete for the WILL role. Austin Ajiake and Jaylon Carlies are also in the mix. Teams typically carry five linebackers, sometimes six, leaving a potential opening for a special teams standout like Weeks to earn his spot.
If his early impression is any indication, this undrafted rookie could be wearing a Colts uniform on Sundays sooner than later.
