The Indianapolis Colts may have found their next defensive cornerstone in rookie linebacker CJ Allen. ESPN draft analyst Field Yates recently named Allen one of 10 "instant impact" defenders from the 2026 NFL Draft's Day 2 and Day 3 selections—a nod that shouldn't surprise anyone who followed the Colts' offseason moves.

Yates praised Allen as "an excellent defensive quarterback with good instincts, a feel for zone coverage and pass-rush juice," pointing to his 3.5 sacks last season as evidence of his disruptive potential. With the Colts' linebacker room lacking both experienced depth and high-end talent, the stage is set for Allen to step into a starting role from Day 1.

The big question? Whether Allen will wear the green dot as the Colts' defensive signal-caller. Under defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, no rookie has ever held that responsibility. Anarumo has even used a safety in that role during his time in Cincinnati. However, the veteran coach believes Allen can handle the duties—he did so at Georgia for the past few seasons. But before making it official, Anarumo wants to see Allen prove himself in that capacity at the NFL level during practice.

For now, Anarumo isn't rushing the decision. "Really, that's the last thing on my mind," he said. "I think that if it's a safety or another linebacker, we'll see, but I got a feeling he's going to be able to do it, though. He did it down there, so he's used to it. That's the good news now, with the guys in college, they have that now. They never had it before, and now they do. So, obviously, over the last couple years. So, I think that will help him."

As offseason programs and training camp unfold, the Colts' defensive identity will take shape. But if Allen's college resume and early buzz are any indication, this rookie could be wearing the green dot—and making an instant impact—sooner rather than later.
