When a college coach sends a nine-word warning about your franchise quarterback, you listen. And for the Las Vegas Raiders, that warning about Fernando Mendoza is impossible to ignore.

Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, was always destined for Las Vegas. After capping his collegiate career with a national championship and a Heisman Trophy, the Raiders made it official on April 23. While veteran Kirk Cousins might start the 2026-27 season under center, there's no doubt Mendoza is the long-term answer.

But not everyone is convinced his game translates seamlessly to the next level. An anonymous ACC coach recently delivered a blunt assessment that should make the Raiders take notice: "In the NFL, those throws are getting picked off," the coach told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.

The coach, who faced Mendoza during his time at California in the ACC, pointed to a specific tendency: Mendoza's reliance on back-shoulder throws to his favorite targets. During his standout season at Indiana, Mendoza frequently connected with receivers Omar Cooper Jr. and Elija Sarratt on those precise, touch-heavy passes.

And to be fair, the numbers suggest it worked. Mendoza completed 273 passes for 3,535 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just six interceptions last season. His elite ball placement and touch kept him out of trouble.

But the NFL is a different beast. Defenses are faster, more athletic, and better at diagnosing plays before they unfold. What worked in college could become a liability in the pros. If Mendoza wants to build a lasting career in Las Vegas, he'll need to adjust—because in the NFL, those back-shoulder throws won't always find friendly hands.
