If you thought Sean McVay looked like he'd rather be anywhere else during Ty Simpson's draft-night press conference, you weren't alone. The Rams head coach sat stone-faced beside an animated Les Snead, barely mustering enthusiasm for the Alabama quarterback they'd just selected with the 13th overall pick. One reporter called it the most muted post-draft presser he'd seen across four different beats.
Now we know why—and it had nothing to do with Simpson.
Chris Simms revealed on You Better You Bet that McVay told him the real story: he and general manager Les Snead had gotten into "a little bit of a heated argument" about an unrelated topic moments before stepping to the podium. The tension was still fresh when the cameras started rolling.
"They had a little bit of an argument about something else," Simms explained. "It had nothing to do with that pick. There was a little bit of a heated argument about another topic right before they went out there, and that's why Sean was kind of acting the way he was."
McVay addressed the awkward moment the next day, telling reporters he'd received so many texts about his demeanor that he wanted to clear the air. "Sometimes I can be a little grumpy," he admitted, insisting that every Rams decision is collaborative and that he and Snead are fully aligned.
What he didn't share at the time was the backstage friction that made that press conference so memorable. Now we know: even the best coaching minds can have a disagreement before a big moment—and sometimes, it shows.
