The Kansas City Chiefs may have found a hidden gem in their undrafted free agent class this year, and his name is John Michael Gyllenborg. The Wyoming tight end was one of several standout signings for the Chiefs following the 2026 NFL Draft, joining Duke edge rusher Vincent Anthony Jr. and Cincinnati wide receiver Jeff Caldwell as top additions to the roster.
Gyllenborg’s final season at Wyoming didn’t quite live up to the explosive promise he showed in 2024, largely due to injuries and inconsistent quarterback play. But don’t let that fool you—this is a player with rare athletic traits and plenty of untapped potential. Remarkably, Gyllenborg played fewer than four full games in high school before making the leap to college football, meaning his best football is almost certainly still ahead of him.
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-5¾ and weighing 249 pounds, Gyllenborg is an athletic specimen. He tested in the 87th percentile for tight ends in the 40-yard dash and an eye-popping 96th percentile in the broad jump. That speed makes him a legitimate threat to stack linebackers on seam routes, while his acceleration after the catch forces safeties to rethink their pursuit angles. But he’s not just a straight-line burner—Gyllenborg shows impressive hip flexibility at the top of his routes, exploding out of breaks to create separation from defenders.
Earlier this year at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Gyllenborg talked about his route-running ability, his rapid development after a limited high school career, and the areas of his game he’s focused on improving at the next level. He thrives on over routes and vertical concepts, and his speed makes him a dangerous weapon on schemed touches and drag routes, where he can turn short passes into big gains.
Over the past two seasons, Gyllenborg has also shown growth in his football IQ—he’s become more adept at manipulating defender leverage in man coverage and finding soft spots between the second and third levels of zone defenses. The one area that needs work? His in-line blocking, which will be a key focus as he competes for a roster spot in Kansas City.
For a Chiefs team that loves to deploy athletic tight ends in creative ways, Gyllenborg’s skill set is an intriguing fit. If he can continue to develop and refine his game, this undrafted free agent could be the kind of steal that keeps the Chiefs’ offense humming for years to come.
