Patrick Mahomes has been lighting up the NFL for years, but before he became a Kansas City Chiefs legend, he was already turning heads in college. Former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy recently appeared on The Herd with Colin Cowherd and didn't hold back his admiration for the Texas Tech standout, calling him "the best college quarterback" he's ever seen.
Gundy recalled a memorable moment after a close game against Mahomes' Red Raiders. "We beat them, I think by one point," he said. "I went out on the field and told him, 'Patrick, there's no reason you should come back and play college football next year. You need to go out (for the NFL Draft).' He laughed, but I was being serious. He made play after play after play after play."
Despite Mahomes' incredible talent, he never managed to beat Gundy's Oklahoma State teams during his college career. But that didn't diminish the respect Gundy had for him. The coach highlighted the fierce competition Mahomes faced in the Big 12, noting that the conference consistently produced NFL-caliber quarterbacks over a six- to seven-year stretch. "If you have an NFL team on your team in college, you're going to win games," Gundy explained. "You'll win 9, 10, 11, 12 games. He played against those teams week to week. He was the best college quarterback that I've ever seen."
Mahomes' numbers at Texas Tech speak for themselves. Over three seasons, he completed 859 passes for 11,252 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions, ranking third in school history in both yards and touchdowns. His stellar performance earned him a spot in the Texas Tech Hall of Fame in 2022.
From college phenom to NFL superstar, Mahomes continues to prove that elite talent knows no boundaries. Whether you're gearing up for game day or just love a good football story, his journey is one for the ages.
