Charlie Ward is on the recruiting trail for his second roster as FAMU men’s basketball head coach. Here’s what the Heisman winner is targeting.

Charlie Ward is hitting the recruiting trail with a clear mission: build a Florida A&M roster that can go the distance. After a debut season that saw the Rattlers come within two wins of an NCAA Tournament berth—falling just short in the SWAC semifinals—the Heisman Trophy winner and former NBA guard is no longer feeling his way through the job.

"At the end of the day, it's about getting the right players in here—mindset-wise, academics," Ward told the Tallahassee Democrat from his FAMU office. "And every kid won't be academically strong. But we want to make sure we're doing our part in getting good young men willing to put forth the effort in all areas to be successful."

That means a sharper vetting process, including a close look at NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores. Ward and his staff now know exactly what to ask recruits, and they're targeting players who can bring versatility and size to the floor.

"Having a mixture of players that can play multiple positions, which is something we looked to do this past year. But didn't realize we didn't have much size," Ward explained. "So we just want to make sure that we have a roster that can compete, not just in the SWAC, but non-conference as well. We want to be able to win some of those games."

The Rattlers have already felt the sting of the transfer portal since March, losing shooting guard Anquan Boldin Jr. and stretch four Kaleb Washington. But Ward is reloading, not rebuilding. Hillsborough Community College guard Chandler Davis committed on April 17, bringing a stat line that turns heads: 21.4 points, eight rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game as a sophomore. At 6-foot-5, the Tampa native is exactly the kind of plug-and-play talent Ward is looking for.

As spring turns to summer, the Rattlers are chasing a roster that can not only compete but win—both in conference play and beyond. For a coach who's won at the highest levels of football and basketball, the goal is clear: get the right pieces, and make a run.
