The Chargers have signed center Jake Slaughter, their 2nd-round pick from this year’s NFL Draft.

The Los Angeles Chargers continued to solidify their 2026 draft class on Monday, officially signing second-round pick Jake Slaughter to his rookie contract. The versatile offensive lineman out of Florida becomes the sixth of the team's eight draft selections to put pen to paper, leaving only first-rounder Akheem Mesidor and fourth-rounder Brenen Thompson as the remaining unsigned players.

A multi-year starter for the Gators, Slaughter spent his entire collegiate career snapping the ball at center—every single snap, in fact. But the Chargers see his skillset as a perfect fit for Mike McDaniel's offense across multiple interior positions. While he'll serve as the team's backup center behind Tyler Biadasz, Slaughter will begin his NFL journey transitioning to guard, where his versatility and football IQ can shine.

That transition won't come easy. Slaughter is set to compete with veteran Trevor Penning and free-agent signee Kayode Awosika for the starting left guard spot. On the other side of the line, former Dolphin Cole Strange—who played under McDaniel in 2025—appears locked in as the team's starting right guard. For Slaughter, earning that left guard role means proving he can adapt quickly from the pivot to the pull-and-power demands of guard play in the NFL.

With training camp on the horizon, all eyes will be on how this rookie lineman handles the shift—and whether he can carve out a starting role in a revamped Chargers offensive front.
