Why does Boston keep choking in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics' latest playoff collapse has left fans scratching their heads, and the numbers only deepen the mystery. On paper, the Celtics should have cruised past the Philadelphia 76ers. They outscored them by 20 points over the seven-game series, dominated the boards with 40 more rebounds, and piled up more assists, steals, and blocks. So, what went wrong?

The answer lies in a fatal strategic flaw: an overreliance on the three-point shot. Despite their statistical dominance, Boston's offense was shockingly inefficient. They finished the series with lower field goal, three-point, and free throw percentages than the Sixers. The problem was most glaring over the final three games, where the Celtics went a dismal 36-for-129 (27.9%) from beyond the arc. In Game 7 alone, they missed 36 three-pointers, including a staggering 24 in the second half and just 2-of-13 in the fourth quarter.

When shots aren't falling, great teams adjust. But the Celtics doubled down, firing away from deep even as the misses piled up. "They just did not adjust," Colin Cowherd pointed out on his show. "You're trailing by a point with 3:49 left, you shoot seven threes and you miss all of them! Adjust!" It's a pattern that has haunted this team: living and dying by the three under head coach Joe Mazzulla.

That approach earned them a championship in 2024, but in three other seasons, it has led to early exits against heavily favored opponents. Last year, a similar collapse against the New York Knicks should have been a wake-up call. Instead, the Celtics repeated the same mistakes, and the result was the same—a season ended too soon. For a team with so much talent, the lesson remains painfully unlearned.
