Michigan State's wide receiver room just got a deeper and more experienced boost. Following a weekend visit for the Spartans' spring showcase, former Cass Tech standout Jameel Gardner Jr. has committed to the program as a graduate transfer, bringing his talents back to his home state.
Gardner, a 6-foot receiver from Detroit, brings three seasons of collegiate production to East Lansing. After a year at Kent State, he spent the last two seasons at Jackson State, amassing 68 career receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns. His most recent campaign saw him haul in 32 passes for 483 yards, showcasing the reliable hands and route-running that made him a second-team all-state selection at Cass Tech.
His arrival adds a new dimension to a receiver group that displayed its potential during Saturday's spring game. The Spartans saw promising reps from players like Charles Taplin II, Chrishon McCray, and Rodney Bullard Jr., alongside a mix of talented underclassmen and transfers. Gardner's experience and proven track record will provide immediate competition and depth, a crucial asset for any Big Ten offense.
Notably, Gardner reunites with a familiar face; he was a teammate of current Spartan Chrishon McCray during his 2023 season at Kent State, where he started eight games. This existing chemistry could help accelerate his integration into the offensive scheme. For Gardner, this move represents a homecoming and a significant opportunity to make an impact at the Power Five level, adding an exciting new chapter to the Spartans' offensive story for the upcoming season.
