The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a bold move in the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting Georgia State wide receiver Ted Hurst with the 84th overall pick in the third round. But with franchise legend Mike Evans now wearing a San Francisco 49ers jersey, all eyes are on this rookie to see if he can fill some very big shoes.

Hurst brings an impressive athletic profile to the table. At 6-foot-3, he clocked a blazing 4.42-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, paired with a 36.5-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-3 broad jump. Those numbers scream playmaker potential, and his ability to make contested catches consistently has scouts buzzing.

His journey to the NFL is a story of perseverance. Hurst started his college career at Valdosta State, where he hauled in 60 receptions for 1,027 yards and 10 touchdowns over two seasons. He then transferred to Georgia State in 2024, immediately making an impact with 56 catches for 961 yards and nine touchdowns, earning Second-Team All-Sun Belt honors. His senior year in 2025 was even better—71 receptions for 1,004 yards and six touchdowns—landing him a First-Team All-Sun Belt selection.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has already taken notice. Speaking at rookie minicamp, Bowles praised Hurst's "great size" and athleticism, though he added a lighthearted note: "He's got to get used to the heat a little bit himself. Even though he's from Georgia, he's got to get used to the heat a little bit."

Of course, replacing Mike Evans is no small task. In 11 legendary seasons with the Bucs, Evans amassed 866 receptions for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns—numbers that put him in the conversation as one of the greatest receivers of his generation. His departure to the 49ers on a three-year deal this past March left a gaping hole in Tampa Bay's offense.

Buccaneers Assistant General Manager Rob McCartney addressed the elephant in the room directly. "We're never going to replace Mike, but you do try to replace his size and speed, which Mike had. I think Ted has that, too," McCartney said. He also highlighted Hurst's character, noting that despite opportunities to transfer to bigger schools through NIL deals, Hurst "stayed loyal to Georgia State, which is kind of refreshing in this day and age."

While no rookie can instantly replicate Evans' Hall of Fame-caliber production, Hurst's combination of size, speed, and work ethic gives Bucs fans a reason to be optimistic. Whether he can grow into a reliable target for years to come is a storyline worth watching this season.
