Francesco Calzona, the former head coach of the Slovakia national team, has made it clear that his next chapter belongs in club football—and while Italy is his top choice, he’s open to another adventure abroad.
The 57-year-old Italian tactician recently stepped away from the Slovakian bench after turning down a contract extension, ending a two-year stint that saw him guide the team through a memorable period. But Calzona’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Before taking the reins of a national team in 2022, he spent years as an assistant to top Serie A minds like Maurizio Sarri, Eusebio Di Francesco, and Luciano Spalletti. That experience gave him a deep understanding of the game, but it was his sudden leap to head coach that truly tested his mettle.
His time with Slovakia was unique—and at times, chaotic. From February to June 2024, he even juggled dual roles, serving as both Slovakia’s head coach and the interim manager of Napoli, a stint that added a layer of intensity to an already demanding schedule. Reflecting on his national team experience, Calzona shared a candid perspective: “National team football gives you a great deal, but it takes away a lot too. There are only games every three or four months, and when you finally have the players together, there’s very little time to build an identity. We had 22 out of 27 players spread across different leagues—getting them together was a real challenge, but it was also incredibly rewarding.”
Now, as a free agent, Calzona is eager to get back to the daily grind of club football. “Club football is a whole different world—you’re on the field every day, and that’s what someone in our profession truly craves,” he explained. “Italy has the priority for me, but I wouldn’t mind another experience abroad. My time in Slovakia was fantastic, but Serie A is a tactical battleground. The coaches here are so well-prepared, and there are so many talented bosses in the league.”
For fans of the beautiful game, Calzona’s return to the club scene promises to bring fresh energy and a wealth of experience. Whether he lands in Italy or abroad, one thing is certain: this is a coach ready to make his mark once again. And for those of us who love the game, it’s an exciting story to follow—especially as we gear up for the next season’s action on the pitch.
