American racing fans have a new driver to watch for on Formula 1 weekends. Cadillac has officially confirmed that its test driver, IndyCar star Colton Herta, will take part in four FP1 sessions this season, beginning with the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona this June.
This move marks a significant step in the 26-year-old's ambitious transition to F1. After a standout seven-year IndyCar career that saw him finish as championship runner-up in 2024, Herta moved to Europe to spearhead Cadillac's development program for its debut F1 campaign. These practice sessions are a crucial part of his role, fulfilling the F1 mandate that requires teams to give young drivers track time.
"I can’t wait to get behind the wheel," Herta said, expressing his eagerness to contribute. In Spain, he will temporarily take the seat of either Sergio Perez or Valtteri Bottas, aiming to absorb as much as possible from the full grand prix environment and aid the team's development.
This FP1 program is a key milestone in Herta's ultimate quest for a full-time F1 seat. To stay race-sharp, he is also competing in Formula 2 with Hitech, where he has already scored points. Cadillac Team Principal Graeme Lowdon praised Herta's "top talent," highlighting his strong resume and immediate impact.
For the Cadillac team itself, which is seeking its first points in a challenging debut season, integrating a dynamic talent like Herta provides a valuable development boost and a glimpse into a promising American future in the sport.
