The clock is ticking on Giannis Antetokounmpo's future in Milwaukee, and Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam wants clarity before the NBA Draft next month.
Speaking at new head coach Taylor Jenkins' introductory press conference, Haslam made it clear the team needs to know whether their two-time MVP will sign an extension or be traded this summer. "Before the draft is a natural time," Haslam said. "If Giannis does play somewhere else, we've got to have a lot of assets. If he's here, you build the team differently."
That timeline makes sense from a roster-building perspective. Any potential trade would likely include this year's draft pick, giving the Bucks maximum flexibility whether they're retooling around Antetokounmpo or starting a rebuild with a haul of assets. General Manager Jon Horst already tested the trade waters at the deadline, holding off in hopes of a stronger market this offseason.
The situation is complicated by Antetokounmpo's contract leverage. With just one year remaining on his deal plus a player option, the Greek Freak holds significant power to dictate his destination. Teams interested in acquiring him know he could simply opt out and walk if he's not happy with the landing spot.
For now, Antetokounmpo is singing a different tune about the Bucks' direction. He praised Jenkins' hiring, telling the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "I think he's an incredible person and an incredible coach. He had incredible culture in Memphis. I don't think Milwaukee is just getting a good coach, I think they're getting a good person."
But when asked directly if he'll play for the new coach, Antetokounmpo's response was telling: "We'll see."
With the draft just weeks away, all eyes are on Milwaukee as one of the biggest decisions in franchise history looms. Whether the Bucks build around their superstar or cash in on a blockbuster trade, the answer is coming soon.
