Mississippi State baseball fans can breathe a little easier this week. Head coach Brian O'Connor provided a promising update on starting pitcher Ryan McPherson, who suffered an ankle injury during his return to the mound against Auburn.
The setback occurred in the second inning of the series finale on May 9, when McPherson tripped behind home plate while backing up a potential throw. He was removed after just 1⅓ innings, though he was only six pitches shy of his 40-pitch limit.
"I talked with him yesterday and he was a little bit sore, but we're having practice today, so we'll see as the day goes on," O'Connor told SuperTalk Mississippi radio on May 11. "I think that he'll be fine and ready to go this weekend, but we'll obviously talk to him today and find out where he's at."
This injury was especially concerning given McPherson's history. The right-hander was making his first appearance since March 20, when he suffered a forearm strain against Vanderbilt. After weeks of rehab and recovery, seeing him go down again—even with a seemingly minor ankle issue—was a tough break for both the player and the Bulldogs' pitching staff.
With a crucial series against Texas A&M on the horizon, Mississippi State needs all hands on deck. O'Connor's cautious optimism suggests McPherson could be back in the rotation, but the team will monitor his progress closely during practice. For Bulldog fans, every update on McPherson's status feels like a game-time decision in itself.
Stay tuned as we track McPherson's recovery and what it means for Mississippi State's postseason push.
