If you've ever wondered what it feels like to tear around the legendary North West 200 circuit, just ask Charley Boorman. The television adventurer and motorcycle enthusiast recently joined 11-time NW200 winner Glenn Irwin for a parade lap of the iconic 8.97-mile Triangle course, and he's still catching his breath.
Boorman, best known for his epic motorcycle journeys with Ewan McGregor in Long Way Round, is making his first visit to the iconic international road race. And let's just say, the experience left an impression. "In Northern Ireland they really love their motorcycles," Boorman shared on the latest episode of The BBC Bikes Podcast. "You can see it, and they have been so welcoming."
Riding behind the safety car on closed roads, Boorman got a firsthand taste of what makes the NW200 one of motorsport's most thrilling—and challenging—events. "We were quite relieved that we had to follow the safety car," he admitted. "From never having been on this track, I can see how terrifying it is when it’s wet and dry and super slippy."
For Irwin, the current lap record holder, showing Boorman around was a chance to share the magic of the event. "To share some of the energy, the feelings, and the love of this event has been a pleasure for me," Irwin said. The two riders first connected on a factory Ducati trip, and this lap was a natural extension of their shared passion for two wheels.
Boorman summed it up best: "Every fan here would love to be in my position—to follow Glenn on a beautiful bike on an amazing track." And for anyone who's ever dreamed of riding the NW200, that's the kind of moment that fuels the fire.
