The Green Bay Packers' secondary is getting a major shakeup—and new Secondary/Pass Game Coordinator Bobby Babich is wasting no time setting the tone. During his first media session of the offseason on May 5 at Lambeau Field, Babich made it clear: turnovers are the top priority.
Babich joins the Packers after two seasons as the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator, bringing a wealth of experience to a unit that ranked 28th in the NFL last season with just seven interceptions. He's one of three new assistants hired by Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, and while the two had never worked together before, their connection began at the NFL scouting combine.
"We got to know each other there, probably spent an hour, two hours talking defensive football," Babich recalled. "That's when we first officially met and spent time together."
Football runs deep in Babich's blood. His father, Bob Babich, spent nearly two decades coaching in college—including stints as Wisconsin's offensive line coach and head coach at North Dakota State—before moving to the NFL as a defensive assistant from 2003 to 2021. Bobby Babich himself has coached defensive backs and linebackers at a high level, and now he's tasked with transforming a Packers secondary that struggled to create takeaways.
"There's so much that goes into it, I could sit up here and give a 50-minute dissertation about it," Babich said when asked about the turnover drought. "You get what you emphasize. You've got to be opportunistic. One of the things I tell the guys all the time: we don't need to chase plays, we need to put ourselves in position to make plays. When that ball shows up, you better make sure you've repetitioned that so much that it becomes second nature."
For Packers fans—and anyone who loves a defense that forces turnovers—Babich's message is clear: expect a more aggressive, prepared secondary in 2025. And for those of us who appreciate the gear that goes with the game, there's nothing like watching a ball-hawking defense take the field in fresh Packers threads.
