UCLA is coming off of a 3-9 season but there's a lot of reason for hope with new head coach Bob Chesney. Chesney believes in QB Nici Iamaleava.

When a team stumbles through a 3-9 season, hope often rests on fresh leadership and a spark under center. For the UCLA Bruins, that spark is quarterback Nico Iamaleava—and new head coach Bob Chesney isn't shy about letting the world know.

"This kid could do it all," Chesney said recently on the Jim Rome Show, describing the 6'6" former five-star recruit. "He can push the ball vertically down the field. When it's time to pull the ball down and run, he is as electric as any quarterback right now in college football."

That's high praise for a player who entered UCLA under less-than-ideal circumstances. Iamaleava didn't join the Bruins until midway through last summer, following a turbulent exit from an SEC program. Then, within the first three weeks of the season, the offensive coordinator, head coach, and quarterbacks coach were all gone.

"To be able to keep it together speaks volumes of his leadership and just his mental toughness," Chesney added. "He loves this game. He is passionate about it. His mouth doesn't stop running when he makes a play against the defense, and they don't stop yelling back at him. It's just a fun environment."

Despite the chaos, Iamaleava still managed to post 1,928 passing yards, 505 rushing yards, and 17 touchdowns across 11 games in 2025. Now, with a full offseason under Chesney's system and an elevated talent level around him, the Bruins are banking on consistency.

"He's a leader," Chesney emphasized. "I look back a lot at what these guys just went through." If Iamaleava can take that next step, UCLA's offense could become must-watch—and that's exactly what fans need after a tough 3-9 campaign.
