Monday night was not a good one for the Kentucky Wildcats and Big Blue Nation. Transfer portal forward Donnie Freeman announced his commitment to St. John's and coach Mark Pope whiffed on another target this offseason. It seemed like a lock that he would be a Wildcat last week, but former coach Rick Pitino lured him away, leaving Kentucky fans feeling a familiar disappointing feeling.

The Wildcats have landed guards Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins so far, and got two talented players. However, the roster is still woefully understaffed, and the frontcourt is currently a mess. Malachi Moreno may not return, and Reece Potter is the only other big man they have.

Pope has targeted several power forwards, but has missed on each of them so far. There are still some good options left, but time is running out, and Kentucky fans are getting nervous.

There are a lot of questions about Pope's ability to land top players, and they seem justified. He has struggled to close while rival schools like the Duke Blue Devils and Tennessee Volunteers continue to rack up talent. Fans took to X on Monday night to express their frustrations with the state of the program. Here are some of their thoughts.

Given all the resources, is Mark Pope the worst recruiter in the country?

Mark Pope needs to hire a GM. How is that so hard for him to figure out? He’s straight up NOT good at this negotiating stuff. The proof is in the pudding.

I don’t know how to put this kindly. Mark Pope is the active head coach at one of—if not THE—premier college basketball programs in the entire country and has been for 3 off seasons now. He ALSO has had the single largest recruitment budget in the sport for those seasons.…

Kentucky essentially passed on Rancik because they were sure they were getting Freeman. They got neither Mismanagement by a staff that insisted they didn’t need a GM. Fairly impossible to defend

The Mark Pope experience has been brutal man that’s all I’ll say.Donnie Freeman -> St. John’s

I thought Mark Pope said that recruiting was gonna turn out just fine. This appears to be a disaster. We barely have a team.

Light years. The mark pope hire has set this program back light years.

What does Mark Pope even do? He literally is the whiff man. It’s unreal

Will Stein is selling Kentucky FOOTBALL and you can’t overpay to get guys to Rupp Arena?

I’ll be happier than anyone if Mark Pope turns things around and proves us all wrong. But at this point, he’s gotta show us SOMETHING.

#BBN Mark Pope fate decides on whether Tyran Stokes picks UK or Kansas/Oregon…What a time to be alive

This is not a good situation for Mark Pope. Between the silence and the misses on our biggest targets, he’s digging a hole he may not be able to climb out of. Hard to get the fanbase on board when u can’t confidently put together the team u want. Sad really.
